Go Back to China
Go Back to China stands as an innovative and thought-provoking project, made possible through the invaluable guidance and mentorship of Professor Kevin Haas. This experimental endeavor is intricately linked to another compelling video project titled "Honor." In this video performance piece, I found myself confined within a room surrounded by the fragrance of burning incense.
The profound message of hatred, encapsulated by the words "go back to China," was boldly screen-printed onto a delicate "sheet" of incense. This unique medium served as a poignant representation of the transformative process at the heart of the project — a symbolic burning away of prejudiced messages, allowing the ashes to drift away with the wind. Through this powerful act, the project aimed to foster a journey towards inner peace and self-acceptance.
The convergence of visual art and performance in "Go Back to China" serves as a testament to the transformative power of creative expression. By choosing a medium as ephemeral as incense, the project not only challenges societal prejudices but also invites viewers to contemplate the impermanence of hatred and the possibility of cultivating harmony within oneself.
This project is a reflection on resilience, challenging stereotypes, and ultimately embracing a sense of tranquility amidst adversity. "Go Back to China" invites its audience to confront and dismantle the negativity embedded in prejudiced messages, inspiring a collective journey toward understanding and unity.
