Ong Ngoai | A Father’s Farewell

Ông Ngoại (2019-2022)

Ông Ngoại, meaning Grandfather in Vietnamese, is a poignant project that unfolded from 2019 to 2022, leaving an indelible mark on the intersection of art and personal narrative. Noteworthy for its inclusion in the 2022 NCOA (National Council on Aging) Caregiving - Aging Well for All virtual show, this series serves as a visual journey and a tribute to a beloved grandfather.

The project's primary objective was to shed light on Alzheimer’s disease, imparting knowledge and fostering awareness while extending gratitude to the unsung heroes—the caregivers. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ông Ngoại took on added significance, becoming a heartfelt dedication to my grandfather, who succumbed to COVID-19 in March 2022.

The images captured throughout the project offer a glimpse into the complexities of Alzheimer’s, narrating a story of resilience, love, and the unwavering commitment of those who stand by their loved ones during trying times. Featured in the NCOA virtual show, Ông Ngoại serves as a testament to the power of visual storytelling in advocating for understanding and empathy.

A Father’s Farewell (2022)

The documentary project A Father’s Farewell seamlessly continued alongside Ông Ngoại until the inevitable passing and burial of the artist's grandfather. This endeavor extends beyond traditional storytelling, capturing the raw emotions and nuanced moments that characterize the farewell to a patriarch.

As the lens continued to document the journey, it became a cathartic exploration of loss and a celebration of a life well-lived. The project encapsulates the profound impact of COVID-19 on families and communities, narrating a personal story that resonates with the universal experiences of grief and remembrance.

A Father’s Farewell stands as a testament to the artist's commitment to bearing witness to life's most intimate moments, allowing viewers to connect with the universal themes of love, loss, and the enduring legacy of those who have left an indelible mark on our lives. Through this documentary, I strived to extend an invitation to share in the journey of saying goodbye—a journey that transcends individual sorrow to become a collective reflection on the fragility and beauty of life.
