To Those Before Us

To Those Before Us (2023) is a poignant photographic series capturing the essence of Asian American elders in the heart of the Chinatown International District in Seattle, WA. The project found its showcase at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum in Pullman, WA. Stemming from a deep-seated desire to honor and celebrate the resilience of the community's elders, particularly in the aftermath of a pandemic that deeply affected their lives, this collection serves as a visual tribute. Noteworthy for its inclusion in the 2023 NCOA (National Council on Aging) Celebrating the Strength and Wisdom of Women virtual show, this series serves as a visual journey and a tribute to a beloved grandfather.

Inspired by personal loss during the pandemic, specifically the passing of my grandparents, I recognized the urgency to bridge the generational gap between them and my own. As a storyteller, I embarked on this journey to unearth the untold stories concealed by a language barrier. To Those Before Us is not just a photographic endeavor; it's a testament to the profound narratives that elders carry, narratives that often remain unheard. This project is a heartfelt exploration of the cultural and generational threads that bind us, offering a platform for these cherished stories to be acknowledged and shared.
